Obesity in African Americans is 51% more than in non-Hispanic Whites. Further, research has also shown that over the last 30 years, the rate of obesity has steadily increased among American adults across the lifespan. Of particular interest to researchers has been the difference in prevalence of obesity depending on racial and ethnic backgrounds of individuals. Research has revealed that the possibility of obesity in African that Black women are more prone to be obese than the rest of the American population.

Essentially, the prevalence of obesity among Black women is not only higher than that in white women, but it is also higher than that which is recorded among Black men. Thus, there appear to be two distinct factors, which ought to be studied as possible influencers of these statistics and these are race and gender.
