The United States Constitution recognizes the religious rights of prisoners provided that they do not infringe on the rights of other inmates or contravene the law. This paper will discuss how an administrator of a penal institution would observe the religious rights of an inmate.
I would grant them rights in the areas of; meals, religious services, religious objects, religious literature, and grooming. Firstly, I would make rational accommodations with regard to diet. Some religions require their adherents to avoid certain foods such as pork for Muslims and beef for Hindus. I would also ensure that I provide a nutritious meal in place of these foods. However, it’d also be prudent to ensure that these inmates are not given alternatives that may cause other inmates to consider themselves disadvantaged in comparison.
